Questions and answers

What do I enter on this page, and what does it show?

You answer questions about your year, such as whether you lived in Japan all year, whether all your salary came from one employer in Japan, whether you have an e-Tax user ID, and whether you had items such as RSUs, foreign income, property or deductions. If the fee can be set from your answers, the page shows it before and including tax, with the price for each payment date and a breakdown. If it cannot, the page says so and you can request a written quote. We ask for your name and e-mail only if you go on to apply.

Why is the fee this low for licensed work?

Your return is prepared, checked and filed, and the tax office's queries are handled, by a licensed zeirishi (certified public tax accountant) in person, not by unlicensed staff. The same licensed work as our Full-service plan; only the way we work with you is different. The fee is set as low as it goes because the work on our side is kept to a minimum, with no room for extra work. So from the moment something is missing, unreadable or different from your answers, the extra fee applies at the amounts shown here. We tell you once, free, what is missing, and we tell you the amount of any extra fee before filing.

What does the zeirishi's signature on my return mean?

When we file a return as your tax agent, the Certified Public Tax Accountants Act (Article 33) requires the tax accountant to sign it, with a note of that status, and you sign it as well. It shows that a licensed professional prepared it and takes responsibility for the preparation; it does not by itself change how the tax office assesses the return.

Why do I have to file if my salary is over ¥20 million?

The exemption from filing for salary earners (Income Tax Act, Article 121(1)) applies only when the salary paid in the year is ¥20 million or less, so above that amount a return is required even if your employer did a year-end adjustment. Other conditions can also require a return; we check them from your answers and documents.

When will my withholding slip (gensen choshu-hyo) arrive?

Under the Income Tax Act (Article 226(1)), your employer gives it to you by 31 January of the following year; as 31 January 2027 is a Sunday, the statutory deadline for 2026 slips is 1 February 2027. Please send it to us as a PDF within 7 days of receiving it, and by 31 January; if your employer cannot issue it in time, tell us before 31 January and we may accept it in February.

What if I withdraw after paying?

Before we confirm your payment, we refund everything. After that, if we are not at fault, we refund 70% of what you paid before we send you the draft, and nothing once we have sent it. If we are at fault or we do not accept your application, we refund everything. We bear the bank charges for refunds.

My employer does a year-end adjustment, but I also receive RSUs or other pay from a parent company abroad. Do I need to file?

Generally, yes. If part of your salary, such as RSUs from a parent company abroad, is not subject to Japanese withholding, the exemption for salary earners in the Income Tax Act (Article 121(1)) does not apply, whatever the amount, and you must file as long as the filing requirement in Article 120(1) is met. The National Tax Agency gives the same answer in its published Q&A on salary not subject to withholding. This page does not decide whether you need to file. RSUs and similar pay are among the items the questions above cover.

My employer does a year-end adjustment. Do I still need to file?

It depends on your situation, and this page does not decide that for you. If you are unsure whether you need to file, request a written quote.

I do not know my e-Tax user ID or password.

Choose "I have forgotten the number or the password" or "There is a problem with the registration, or I am not sure" in the e-Tax question. We check and handle the steps as your agent, and the addition shows in your fee.

Can you file for my spouse or family too?

This page is for one person's own return. Each family member applies separately with their own answers.

What if the tax office asks about my return later?

We handle one round of queries about the return we file, for 12 months, as part of your fee. Further rounds or a tax audit are quoted when they arise.

Do you give tax-saving advice?

With the Full-service plan we review your situation, look for deductions and reliefs you may have missed, and advise on them. With the Standard plan we file from your answers and documents, and do not look for extra deductions.

I have freelance or business income. Can I apply?

We do not accept online applications for returns with business income. Depending on the details we may quote in writing, and we may not be able to accept it.

What if a file I send cannot be opened?

We tell you once at no charge what to send again. If it still cannot be used after that, each further notice costs ¥10,000 before tax (¥11,000 including tax).

What about resident tax?

The resident tax section that is part of the income tax return is included. Your municipality calculates resident tax, which is collected through payroll or paid directly, depending on your circumstances. Other local tax filings are not included.

When can the fee change after I pay?

Only if your documents show different facts and you agree to the new fee in writing, or for the additional fees in the rules above. They are settled before filing. If the return shows tax to pay, we may offer direct debit or a reduction of estimated prepayments as additions then.

What if I pay after 15 November?

The amount for the date your payment reaches us applies. If you paid less than that, we e-mail you the difference before we confirm your payment.

Can I pay by card or from abroad?

Only by bank transfer in yen from a bank account in Japan. We do not accept transfers from outside Japan.

Can I ask you questions?

Before payment we do not answer individual questions. After that, with the Standard plan (or beyond the 5 questions included in the Full-service plan), each question is charged by type (the list is on the confirm screen), and we tell you the amount and wait for your OK before answering.

Does a high income cost more?

Income up to JPY 50 million is included in the base fee. Above that, an addition applies and shows in your fee.
